Social media has become popular because it has created a platform easily accessible to anyone with internet access. Increased communication for organizations fosters brand awareness and often, improved customer service. But anoher thing is important. Power has shifted.
Yes, power has shifted. What held true in the “golden age
of advertising” no longer holds true in this dawn of the “golden age of the individual.”
The power to invoke a buying decision has not only moved from businesses to consumers, the customers have CHANGED. The individual habits and expectations of modern consumers have changed the landscape into which marketing and advertising campaigns are launched. Individuals are forming digital communities and conversations are going on about anything –including brands. The emergence of mobile and digital technology is shifting how people consume media content.
Social media marketing programs usually center on efforts to create content and tactics that attracts attention and encourages readers to share it with their personal networks. A corporate message spreads from user to user and presumably resonates because it appears to come from a trusted, third-party source, as opposed to the brand or company itself. Hence, this form of marketing is driven by word-of-mouth ( we call it word of mouse!), meaning it results in earned media rather than paid media. But then customers also have the power to reply and communicate back and this is a potential sore thumb if Social Media isn’t handled well.
